I had a request today for a copy of the baby storytime rhymes, so here they are! Enjoy! –Miss Amy @ Evans

Dance your fingers up,

Hiawatha the Talking Cockatoo!

Look at this guy! Isn’t he so handsome? This is Hiawatha, and he just visited the Evans branch! His “mom,” Karin, told us lots about Hiawatha and other birds like him. She told us lots of stories about Hiawatha, like how she has to hug and kiss him before he’ll go in his cage, or how he said “That’s awful!” when she gave him a kind of food he didn’t like! He can even dance! He’s called an umbrella cockatoo because he has feathers on the top of his head that he can move to look like an umbrella. Sven’s Bridge

I was reading an article about Anita Lobel recently, and it mentioned her first children’s book: Sven’s Bridge. This piqued my interest, so I ordered the book from the Pittsford library. It sat on my bookshelf at home for a while, but when I finally got around to reading it, I loved it. It is a delightful little story, with the most detailed (and adorable) illustrations you’ve ever seen. One little detail that I love is when Sven smokes his pipe, there’s a little curlicue coming out the pipe to represent smoke. So adorable! And the mechanism that lifts and lowers the bridge is really neat – Anita Lobel said she modeled after some kind of old fashioned coffee grinder (I think). Anyway, it’s definitely worth checking out. We don’t have it at IPL, but here is the link to it in the MCLS catalog:

I just discovered the most magical book! It’s “The Magic Pocket,” written by Michio Mado and illustrated by Mitsumasa Anno. The illustrations are darling! Here is one of the poems (I picked one at random):

The Magic Pocket
Inside the pocket
There’s one cookie.
Hit the pocket,
There are two!

Hit it again,
There are three.
The more I hit it,
The more there are!

I wish I had
A pocket like that!
I wish I had
A pocket like that!

We have it at the Evans branch, so be sure to check it out! If you’re into the Japanese “kawaii” style of illustration, you’ll particularly like this book.

Tail Waggin’ Tutors at the Evans Branch

We had 5 therapy dogs visit the library last night, and kids snuggled up to them to practice their reading! It was a really fun event, with lots of reading and love! Check out photos from the event on our Flickr site. We’ll definitely have these book-loving dogs back to the library!

Sally Valentine at the Evans Branch

Sally Valentine, local author extraordinaire, visited the Evans Branch last night! There was a great turnout, and Ms. Valentine regaled the crowd with tales of the ghosts of Rochester. She signed copies of her books (The Ghost of the Charlotte Lighthouse; Theft at the George Eastman House, and What Stinks? An Adventure in Highland Park) after her presentation. She has a new book coming out in the spring, which will be set in Seabreeze! Thanks to Ms. Valentine for such a fun evening, and thanks to all the folks who braved the cold to attend!
